Story
Growing up and spending most of my life in the Midwest, I became well acquainted with winter. Outside of some childhood enjoyment, the season was, for the most part, something that you just had to deal with while looking forward to the warmer months. This perspective changed when I discovered snowshoe running a couple years ago. Now, I actively look forward to the changing seasons and diversity in gear that comes with taking full advantage of them. While I'd spent some time on cross country skis, and continue to enjoy them when conditions allow, I find that I’m able to get outside in a greater variety of conditions and explore more trails during the winter, now that I’ve discovered snowshoe running.
Accomplishments
Over the last few years, I've been working through the painful process of attempting to become an endurance athlete in a way that is flexible and allows for a variety of outdoor pursuits. This led me initially back into running, then to triathlon, and in the process, turned a hiking hobby into trail running, and a road cycling interest to mountain/fat biking. These shifts have felt more aligned with my interest in being outdoors and in nature, creating my own self-propelled adventures. Each of the past two winters, I've competed in a local snowshoe race series (5k/10k distances), and a snowshoe/fatbike duathlon event this past year. While it was fun to place well and even win a few, the big reward was finding a new community of endurance athletes and outdoor enthusiasts to engage with in all seasons.
Season Goals
Continue to enjoy the winter through the local races and trails, explore new trails and racing opportunities, stay healthy, have fun and appreciate the outdoors.
